Why Some Candles Cause Headaches
If you've ever lit a candle hoping to relax, only to be met with a headache instead, you're not alone. While candles are meant to soothe, some ingredients in conventional candles can do the opposite. The biggest culprits? Synthetic fragrance oils with phthalates, low-quality wax blends (like paraffin), and heavy dyes. These can emit harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when burned, which may trigger headaches or even respiratory discomfort in sensitive individuals.
Another factor is poor ventilation. Burning multiple candles in a small, enclosed space can concentrate the scent and the particles in the air, which may overwhelm your senses. Even a "good" candle can cause issues if there isn’t enough airflow.
For a headache-free glow, look for candles made with clean-burning soy or coconut wax, cotton wicks, and phthalate-free fragrance oils. Remember: scent should soothe, not stress.
